Good news from Blog@Newsarama!
Marvel.com is going to start showing episodes of the classic 1967 Spider-Man cartoon whose unforgettable theme song inspired the title of moi's blog. Needless to say, I'm just a tiny bit pleased to hear this news.
And you know, it's not just the famous theme song I love - it's the whole soundtrack. The slightly kitschy, insistent background soundtrack is a delight. I'm not only in this opinion, believe it or not. Check out the work of comic-book-loving, Dr. Doom-mask wearing rapper MF Doom, who tends to sample the music and dialogue from tons of 60's and 80's superhero cartoons in his work.
Not everybody's cuppa tea but I enjoy it.
None of which is to slight the always entertaining new Spider-Man cartoon, Spectacular Spider-Man. I'm always impressed by how seamlessly the writers have managed to meld so many different continuities, inserting characters from the Spider-Universe and in-jokes without it feeling shoehorned. Given that it's from the guy who brought us Gargoyles - a show with such cleverness and dark twists that I still can't believe was aired by Disney, of all people - I really don't know why I'm so surprised. Plus, while I obviously love the classics, I gotta say that new theme song's got serious moxie.
(Mind you, no recent cartoon theme song can compare to Puffy AmiYumi and Guitar Wolf's Teen Titans theme song, but hell, no other recent cartoon serious has Guitar Wolf on it. I mean, c'mon guys - Guitar Wolf!)

IS EL LEAPFROGGAHZ GONNA HAVE TO SQUISH A SPIDER?
Please not the date of this post. On April Fool's Day this year, this blog became "Leap-Frog Overdrive! Hella-Cool Angry Costumed Badassss!". As it turns out, only one other person found the joke funny, so I leave these posts up as a warning for myself to plan out April Fool's Day jokes better. Enjoy?

ONE OF US, ONE OF US

I suppose after our President's shocking reveal that he collects comic books, the following story was inevitable.

Well-played, Onion. Well-played. Still not the geekiest link I've seen relating to our new President, tho'.

Happy Year of The Ox!
Happy New Year, everyone!
So, I've been told that 2009 is officially The Year of The Ox!

I have to say that I'm surprised that Marvel would devote a whole year's worth of stories to a low-level thug whose last appearance was getting tortured by Daredevil. Still, it's a bold move and I commend them on their courage. I'm sort of shocked Montana or Fancy Dan didn't get the nod instead but hey, whatever floats their boat.

Guess I should have seen this whole "Year of the Ox" thing coming after they announced Spider-Man: Noir and Incognito. Still, I can't-
Wait, what?

Ohhhhhhhh.
Never mind.
Happy New Year's Anyways, everybody.

Tres - Escarabajo Azul - Jamie Reyes

¡Como dicen en México - Duh! ¿Necesito realmente explicar cómo es impresionante Jamie Reyes? ¿Un adolescente mexicano elegante, responsable quién quiere ser dentista cuando él crece? Significo, me adelanto.

Things you can tell from this Video without knowing a word of Spanish:
- A man in a lion hair vest with a thick mustache smelling the tablecloth while looking for someone? Almost too creepy for a kids' show.
- Rich people are stupid.
- Spider-Man is kind of an asshole to anyone he dates.
- Highly paid biologists take the bus, even when somebody they love might be dying. Why? Because being eco-friendly is IMPORTANT, dammit.
- Knowing Spider-Man is a bad idea. Always, always avoid Spider-Man whenever possible.

Happy Easter Everyone!

Remember folks - Easter isn't all about sitting on the laps of men in bunny costumes or finding dyed eggs on your lawn. There's a reason for the Season, gang! This day actually began because the Christian-type churches wanted to stomp out the ongoing Pagan fertility celebrations of Spring's return that were spread across a variety of cultures. Or something (cut me some slack, people - this isn't "Look Out! Here Comes a Comparative Religions Blog!").
And how did they do this? They spread the heartwarming tale of a lovable zombie named Jesus Christ. Sometimes by force, but always with love. Go to Scaffer The Darklord's MySpace Page and click on Night of The Living Christ to hear this beautiful story . . . Nerdcore-style.

But hey, remember folks, there's no such thing as a War On Easter.Sure, there were the occasional burning of heretics at the stake, but mostly? The only things that got warmed were people's hearts. Awwwwwwwwwwwwww. And not many people realize this, but Spider-Man helped out too!

Yay, Spidey!
And now we have chocolate rabbits, big and bigger. More importantly, Easter gave birth to those most blessed of creatures, Peeps! Say what you want, I love these sweet, gentle creatures. Especially when they fight to the death:
I hope that all of you enjoy this special day, be it filled with making Marshmallow creatures Fight to the Death or a hearty feast. And enjoy the worship of whomever you hold dear - be it the sacrifice of a loving Zombie, a gentle Pagan celebration, or Buddha. Buddha really loves Easter, you know. He'll eat all your honey-baked ham if you don't watch him like a hawk. Your yams too. Seriously. I'm not even kidding. If you meet the Buddha on the road, don't invite Buddha to Easter Dinner. Dude's kind of a tool - unlike our resurrected ZJC, who also slays Vampires in his spare time:

Like, a LOT of Vampires, actually:
Go Jesus! Zombie defeats Vamipres FTW!
So mainly, the lesson here I'm trying to impart is this - Easter Kicks Ass!
And don't piss off the Easter Bunny.
ETA: Polite Dissent also loves Peeps and Comics - and like an Easter Mad Scientist, he's combined the two!

News in Brief
VERY SAD NEWS: Dave Stevens, creator of The Rocketeer and the man who is credited with revitalizing Bettie Page's career and the pin-up aesthetic, has passed away from a battle with Leukemia. Smarter people than I have put up their tributes here, here and here.

I think it's safe to say that seeing The Rocketeer movie at a formative age is what got me so interested in the 1930's, the 1940's and the overall pulp aesthetic. Without him and his work, I might have never discovered Film Noir and pulp serials, among so many other things.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Stevens.
MUCH HAPPIER NEWS: That new Spectacular Spider-Man Cartoon done by the dude who did Gargoyles? Pretty good so far, actually.
Robert Englund is The Vulture, Keith David and Clancy Brown are also doing voices and hey, how about that theme song? "Spec-TAC-u-LAR, Spec-TAC-u-LAR, SPIDER-MAN!"
Why, it's so catchy I can even accept Nerd Gwen Stacey and Hispanic Cheerleader Liz Allen without blinking. Much.
REAL LIFE NEWS! Insomnia's not fun, especially when it randomizes your sleep schedule. And a beautiful 6 in the morning to all of you, btw.
ITEM! A new Serenity/Firefly mini-series starts today, with Wash, Book and covers by Adam Hughes. Makes a fella feel right shiny, it gorram does.
FLASH! He'll save every one of us!
ITEM! Empowered, Vol. 3 comes out today! I'm throwing personal finances to the wind to purchase it today! Are YOU?

And if you've no idea, what I'm talking about, there's a nifty, full-color 8-page Empowered story up here for your enjoyment.
ITEM! I need a price check on Register Nine!
Actually, what ARE any of you buying this beautiful Wednesday? What's on your pull list today? We here at The LookOut need to know!

14 Comic Book Couples I Love - Part 5

I'm putting this couple up here because they're important - not just to me but to fandom in general. They've shown that people care about comic book couples to the point of almost being scary, albeit for totally valid reasons (most of the time). They're nigh-on as iconic as Superman and Lois Lane, as fun as Ice and Guy Gardener, and at times as tumultuous as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. They've been depicted in both film, manga and regular continuity for decades. They may not be your favorite pairing but they were the first comic book couple I ever read about and grew attached to. I'm talking about the one and only . . .
5. Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson

Putting them on this list feels almost expected or gratuitous after all the hullabaloo on Teh Interweb about One More Day and the cheap, magical dissolution of their marriage. Keep in mind, I'm not writing this out of anger (and keep in mind that link right there was Pre-Steph case, so I was a trifle cynical) - I'm writing this out of love. I really do love this couple when they're written correctly, without laziness or cheese. Whereas the Powers That Be at Marvel see only a staid, limiting marriage, a lot of people, myself included, see the strong, healthy relationship they grew up with. Hell, before I ever went on a date, I'd read years and years of "relationship education" in the form of watching Peter Parker woo Mary Jane Watson - which turned out to be a little bit of a mixed blessing but that's a story for another time. Still, the point is that their relationship was an undeniably major influence in how I came to see and understand the very concept of love.

Sounds cheesy, right? I know. I'm almost embarrassed to admit it. It helps to know I'm not alone. The main reason I've loved them is that they're a couple I could understand completely, right from the ground up. Spider-Man is the mask that hides nerdy, insecure Peter Parker, right? We all know that. What most people don't get is that "Mary Jane, the model/actress" is the mask that hides the insecure, often unhappy Mary Jane, the person. They both wear masks and have done so constantly - for years. This was illustrated most poignantly in the briliant GN Spider-Man: Parallel Lives

Mary Jane is a fully-realized woman with her own issues who loves Peter, not in spite of either of their issues but because of them. They suit each other on deeper levels than most people realize. So, if you want to piss me off real quick like and alienate people from this relationship? Reduce her to being nothing but Spider-Man's "Prize" at the end of the day instead of the woman who loves and supports him and - this is crucial - vice versa. Be lazy and write her like a vapid supermodel, instead of the deep, pained woman who sees how hard the life Peter and her share together really is, then chooses to smile and champion him anyways. Par example -

VS

Now, it's okay to have Peter be thankful for having her in his life; in fact, I'd resent it if he wasn't grateful. Still, there's a difference in being thankful for a partner and taking her for granted. Lazily writing MJ as just "the hostage", "the wife" or worse is what some writers have been guilty of for years . . . which I think has lead to the wrongheadedness of One More Day but again, I digress. The point I'm trying to make is that they are thankful for one another and that they should be.

I'd even go so far to say that these two are a trifle codependent but it works for them. One needs the other to stand up to their tallest, to feel their best about life. Peter feels stronger because he can come home to the unwavering support of Mary Jane. Mary Jane feels better about herself because she knows that she makes him feel that way. Every life he saves is half hers and I think that's beautiful. They married one another without pretext or games, knowing full well what it would entail. I'd even go so far as to say that if you're not showing MJ as being as brave or as noble as Peter himself, you're not doing your job.

You know what my favorite thing about Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane is? You might think that it's that Mary Jane is the central (fully-clothed) character, not Spider-Man, and that's fair. No, what I love the most about the series is the cover of that first issue, telling you everything you need to know about these characters. Mary Jane is choosing to love Spider-Man. He may be the one with the powers but she's making the choice to love him. He's trusting her not to let him fall and they're both loving every minute of it.

The one thing I learned about love from the Spidey/MJ marriage growing up was that love wasn't a condition. Seeing these two struggle and support each other taught the naive, younger me that love wasn't a passive, storybook state of being. Love is a choice you have to make every day - something you fight for and maintain like a garden. Sometimes it's a damned hard choice to make but you make it. They call it "making love" for a reason - it's two people putting themselves out there in all their unashamed glory to make something beautiful happen. And if you're doing it right, making love takes a lot of sweat, passion, tenderness and time.

While I do wish they'd show MJ and Spidey sharing these sorts of sentiments when MJ's in something other than lingerie, I suppose it makes sense for Peter to only be able to share his most intimate feelings when he's at his most vulnerable. That and I guess they assume fanboys won't listen to tender moments if she's not half-naked. *sigh* Still, that's not the point. The point is that they're a healthy, happy couple - or were at least, until Joey Q. and company decided that showing a real, adult relationship in comic book form was too much work.

This is the first comic book couple I ever loved and it bothers me that they aren't together any more. Sure, there's still other places I can enjoy Peter and MJ (and I do love the hell out of Ultimate Mary Jane and Peter, mind you) but it's not the same as the marriage I grew up with.

Really, I could post a hundred snapshots of why I love these two but I'll stop here. If anybody needs me, I'll be taking my own advice about waiting out One More Day until people realize just how wonderful this relationship was and bring it back.

K. D. Loves Grant Morrison
So maybe I've gone a little overboard with the photoshopping here, but in a one-two punch of awesome news, it has been pointed out to me that Grant Morrison has ACTUALLY LISTENED TO TEH INTERWEB!!! OMFG!!1!
He has presented a brief glimpse of a Batcave containing a memorial for Stephanie "Spoiler" Brown in a recent issue of Batman (even if it is a sort of dream sequence)! I tip my hat to the wonderful ladies over at Girl-Wonder and When Fangirls Attack for keeping the faith.
And after eating my serving of humble pie for thinking DC was going to shaft us on a Girl Robin Case forever, I also found out today that he ended up using Emma Frost in his New X-Men run as a result of a fan's suggestion on his message board. I mean, wow. That's damned cool.
Morrison? I know you're listening right now - what with the 'actually caring about what us Internet types have to say' and/or the drug-induced Shamanistic connection to the collective unconscious - so I just wanted to say thank you.
Thanks for revitalizing Emma Frost and putting her together with Scott Summers, thus creating the most interesting relationship I've read in a Marvel comic for a very long time (and making Cyclops more interesting to me as a character by proxy). Thanks for New X-Men because, among many other reasons for loving it, it resulted in the creation of Astonishing X-Men which I absolutely adore.
Thanks for Animal Man, both post-modern and non, and his loving suburban family.
Thanks for Evil Skeets because that phrase is just flat-out hilarious to say out loud. "EVIL SKEETS!"
Thank you also for the awesomely trippy series called The Invisibles and the characters within, even though I haven't managed to find the fourth volume at the library yet.
Thanks for giving us fans an image of hope, however fleeting.
. . . Aaaaand I think I just used up my yearly quota of politeness, hope about the Internet to make real change and sycophancy. Back to my cynical hatred of all things before I run out of this emotion humans call "love" before Valentine's Day.

As you may know, I'm not the only one who creates homoerotic Spider-Man joke art - there's a longstanding tradition of comedy gold already in place.
And in the spirit of cheap comedy, here's another easy joke about Spider-Man, this time referencing his unfailing love of Mary Jane (on a serious side note, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane is actually quite lovely and worth checking out. I'm definitely picking it up in regular issue form once Terry Moore comes onboard):
NSFW lyrics, just FYI
And since I like to pretend I have too much class for cheap jokes, here's a Spidey/MJ video with a song I actually listen to regularly:

Me: "Oh, c'mon, it's not that funny."

One More Day . . . IN SONG! Plus, a serious PS.
I said I wouldn't blog about this but c'mon. At this point, I've seen people sharing their thoughts on OMD in blog form. I've seen them sharing their thoughts OMD in Photoshop Form and in comic spoof form. I've even seen them sharing their thoughts through the inexpert use of Fire.
But you know what I haven't seen? I haven't seen anybody share their thoughts in song! So here goes nothing. These two gentlemen will introduce you to the tune -
Now that you know the tune - sing along!
Hold On (Past Brand New Day)
I know this twist (I know this twist)
Why do you lock yourself up in your hold list?
No one can change Marvel except for you
Don't ever let Joey Q. step all over you
Just close up your wallet and your mind
Isn't it so cool to bitch this way online?
So One More Day's gone and made you want to turn around and say goodbye
Until then fanboy are you going to let them make continuity go awry?
Don't you know?
Don't you know things will change
Things'll go away
If you hold on past Brand New Day
Can you hold on past Brand New Day
Things'll go away
Hold on past Brand New Day
You could complain
Or are you addicted to all the pain?
You've got Quesada to blame for your unhappiness
Oh, baby! "It's magic, we don't have to explain this!"
Letting your e-mails pass him by
Do you really think your blog's going to change his mind?
(No, noooo!)
So One More Day's gone and made you want to turn around and say goodbye
Until then fanboy are you going to let them make continuity go awry
Don't you know?
Don't you know things will change
Things'll go away
If you hold on past Brand New Day
Can you hold on past Brand New Day?
Things'll go away (just four more years and they'll go away)
Hold on past Brand New Day
I know that you're in pain
But you hold on
past Brand New Day and
Act like you're insane
Yeah I know that there is pain
But you
hold on past Brand New Day
and you
Act like, act like you are insane
So One More Day's gone and made you want to turn around and say goodbye
Until then fanboy are you going to let them make continuity go awry
Don't you know?
Don't you know things will change
Things'll go away
If you hold on past Brand New Day
Hoooooooooold ooooooooooooon
Don't you know things will change
Things'll go away
If you hold on past Brand New Day
Can you hold on?
HOLD ON!
PS. On a more serious note, ladies and gents, I lived through the Spider clones and Aunt May's fake death. I stopped buying Spider titles after that and held to my guns until the creation of Ultimate Spider-Man. Still, don't go by my crazy example. This too, will pass, my fanpeople. It's insulting and completely ridiculous but trust me - it'll pass. Plus, I like Dan Slott and feel bad for him right now. This is like some terrible Monkey's Paw thing where his innocent lifelong wish to write Spider-Man was granted by the devil or something.
. . . ooh, situational irony.
If all of you are still p.o'ed - show me. Get off your duffs, really get out there and protest! I double dog dare all of you grouchy bloggers to start picketing outside Marvel's offices . . . dressed as Spider-Man and MJ in her classic Wedding Dress. You heard me.
Even if there's just two guys or two girls - hell, especially if there's just two guys or two girls - that'll make the news. Failing that, please show up to every convention you can in pairs, wearing Spidey & MJ Wedding outfits. It'll be both romantic, a powerful statement and a way to dissolve the stereotype that girls don't read comics - all at the same time!
Seriously, people. Actions speak louder than photoshop, fire or idiotic song parodies.

Just because they make me happy
Spider-Links! Spider-Links! Does whatever a Spider-Link does!
First, we learn that Magneto once had unfortunate facial hair and no helmet, back in the '60s when he fought Spider-Man (and it's Mag-NEAT-oh, Spidey):
The final boss level of Photoshop Hero involves Spider-Man:
And lastly, please enjoy the Ramones:
